“…there are a lot of pilots out there who might find landing a lot easier than current (conventional) teaching permits it to be.” – Australian Flying Magazine

The long-established and popular aviation journal, Australian Flying, has published their third article on the Jacobson Flare (the first was back in March/April 1998 – see under our Media tab, above). This time, a very balanced review of the Jacobson Flare landing technique  is presented in the March/April 2015 issue (available now on the App Store and at newsagents) and just in time for Avalon 2015.

We appreciate very much the time and effort that Australian Flying Magazine’s Editor, Steve Hitchen, has devoted to understanding the JF, flying it and then noting some key points in this supportive review.

This is the most comprehensive feature published by the aviation media to date and we thank Steve sincerely for his open-mindedness and fair comment in assisting in widening industry and pilot discussion on what is still the most neglected subject in aviation – HOW to land an airplane.

The Jacobson Flare for iOS

App Store (USA) Review – “A better way to land: This App is one of the best tools any pilot could have in their flight bag. I highly recommend it.” – MacFlyer1

Marc Santacroce USA 140206

Ask any student pilot, or experienced pilot what the most difficult phase of their pilot training was, and universally the answer will be “landings.” Why is that? As in all things aviation, much of what is taught is based on how your instructor was taught.

So much of learning how to land was based on the Goldilocks method of teaching. “You flared too high,” “you flared too low”, “you flared just right.” It was the trial-and-error approach; eventually you “got it!” Could there possibly be a better way? The Jacobson Flare is that “better way.”

Instead of guessing at altitude, and having to correct that “estimate” for wide, narrow, or sloping runways, wouldn’t you rather use a method that results in consistently good landings to any runway or field?

The traditional method that uses power to correct for altitude, and pitch for airspeed frequently results in an erratic flight path.

Instead, maintaining the correct “sight picture,” following the optimum flight path, recognizing the correct “flare point” and properly transitioning from the approach to the landing aim point results in easier to teach, easier to learn, and repeatably good landings.

Whether you fly cloth covered, light, or heavy metal airplanes, Capt Jacobson has created a superb App, to help you master landings. With videos from a variety of cockpits, and easy to follow instructions, this App is one of the best tools any pilot could have in their flight bag. I highly recommend it.

Thank you from The Jacobson Flare

Hi everyone.

After just six months from the launch of the Jacobson Flare App for the iPad, we wanted to share some of our excitement at YOUR response. Thank you to each and every one of you. We really hope you are enjoying the App. We know many are! We realise that your time is precious and it may be that you haven’t had the opportunity to catch up on our semi-regular Blogs, here on <www.jacobsonflare.com/blog/>.

Hundreds of pilots, at all levels of experience, have now downloaded the App and the feedback has been sensational.

Within weeks of the launch, Apple posted the Jacobson Flare App on their Best New Apps list, on the Australian App Store and we have had some great reviews from the top aviation journals in Australia, including Paul Phelan’s Pro Aviation Blog Page <http://proaviation.com.au/2014/08/02/happier-landings/> and Aero Australia, Australian Flying, AOPA’s Australian Pilot and Sport Aviation Magazines.

In addition, in April 2014, Reckon One Accounting Software made a case-study video of the Jacobson Flare, now posted on their website, <http://www.reckon.com/au/business/one/>

Presentations have been made at a number of flying schools, notably at Moorabbin VIC, and Albury NSW, Australia. In the process, David again renewed his Grade One Instructor rating, while at Albury, in early January 2015.

And now we are very excited and most appreciative in being shortlisted for the forthcoming Australian International Airshow – Innovation Awards for 2015, in a media bulletin by the Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition organiser, Aerospace Australia Ltd (See our post of 30 January 2015).

The Jacobson Flare Pty Ltd is extremely proud to be included among such a prestigious group of contenders, including our great friend and innovative app, AvPlan <http://www.avsoft.com.au/> and we wish them every success.

Captain David Jacobson will be attending the Airshow on Tuesday 24 February – Saturday 28 February 2015 inclusive and would love to meet as many interested parties and supporters as possible. You are welcome to contact him on 0419 346 336 or on email jacobsonflare@bigpond.com to arrange a meeting.

Further details on all of these items and magazine articles can be viewed here anytime, on <https://www.jacobsonflare.com/blog/>.

In conclusion, thank you again for your continuing support and your personal recommendations to your friends and colleagues. Word of mouth is the best tool there is, to break down 100 years of habit.

Kind regards,

Captain David M Jacobson MAP

Post on Facebook JF – “The Jacobson Flare App is One of those Aids That Makes Life Easier” – Marc Santacroce

So, once again in my flying life (started in 1965), I am faced with getting back up to speed on my aviation skills after another extended absence. I am not a high time pilot, just now 2000 PPSEL hours, and I’m probably the ONLY pilot you know who will admit he’s NOT the best pilot of all time. I don’t test well, I have to constantly study to stay on top, and I have to frequently practice my basic maneuvers, as well as my instrument skills.

This last two year hiatus has taken it’s toll, for one I’m older, and aviation has changed in leaps and bounds the past five years. I have to work harder to keep up, and consequently look for any way to make life easier.

The Jacobson Flare App is one of those aids that makes life easier. The App will cost you about what an hour with a CFI will cost, and it is worth every penny.

When I was transitioning from my PPSEL to working on my instrument, I couldn’t find one, not one, instructor who could explain why we teach VFR flight one way and IFR flight another. Of course I’m referring to the perennial debate over whether power or pitch control rate or speed.

Capt Jacobson takes you through a rational analysis of what happens using both methods, then presents a compelling argument of why the “flightpath” method is more effective, and easier to master, than the “airspeed” method.

Three months ago, when I first started using the Jacobson Flare (coincidentally with flying an airplane I hadn’t touched in over 5 years), I found his techniques a struggle. Then, after three practice flights, I nailed it-consistently. Two more months pass (when I couldn’t afford to fly), and I lost my touch again. I emailed Capt Jacobson and he quickly diagnosed my problem as “fixation” on the aim point and flare point. “Open your field of vision”, he said. Today I went up, in a newer, more powerful model of the same airplane and bingo, I got it down.

After 45 minutes of air work, when I was probably too tired to do my best, I hit the pattern for 10 landings. All but one were spot on, and that one was just a longer landing because I hadn’t reduced power as much, and as soon as I should have. I intentionally flew some steep, and some shallow approaches to landing, as well as the optimum 3-4 degree approach, and the Jacobson Flare method works.

Once you learn to work with aim point and flare point, and not be so concerned about HAT, your landings will become more consistent, and more predictable.

On my way back to home field, I gave a newly minted multi-engine pilot a lift. He couldn’t believe my landing. I took the opportunity to sing the Jacobson Flare praises and give him a 30 second tutorial. His only comment was that the method made total sense. Let me commend it to you too.

Everyone says that mastering the landings was the hardest part of learning to fly. Do it the Jacobson Flare way, and they won’t be.
