Generation Next and the Jacobson Flare: Australian Flying Magazine – Nov/Dec 2020

From the earliest stages, back in 1985-87, David Jacobson has shared all aspects of the development of the Jacobson Flare, with as many students, pilots, instructors and other key stakeholders as were interested – for a number of sound reasons:

He wanted immediate feedback, to confirm whether or not he had discovered something interesting, worthwhile and viable;

He would have been no less excited about the breakthrough in HOW to explain the landing manoeuvre, factually and with solid quantification, no matter who had discovered it;

He felt strongly that others could take immediate advantage of the Jacobson Flare, even as each stage was rolled out and refined and then re-refined, ignorer to improve flight safety; and

He needed others to make independent assessments of the technique and presentation, from the very raw and clumsy initial depictions of 1985, right through to the launching of www.jacobsonflare.com in 2008 and the release of the two editions of the Jacobson Flare App for the iPad (2014) and then for both iOS and Android devices, together with the free companion Jacobson Flare News App (2020).

David has always shared the Jacobson Flare, personally tutoring hundreds of pilots directly and thousands more, via the Jacobson Flare Apps. He is always overwhelmed by how far the acceptance of his work has progressed, since those early days, not to mention his original inspiration in 1965, while learning to fly as a 17 yo student pilot. Pilot comments made quite spontaneously, such as ‘having the elegant simplicity of the safety pin‘, ‘simple, unassailable, aerodynamic logic‘ and ‘you are the very first instructor ever to have taught me HOW to land an aeroplane‘, have provided valuable feedback and the continuing impetus to keep going and to do better at highlighting pilot awareness of its existence.

Encouraging flying schools and other flight training organisations to adopt the Jacobson Flare as their standard training technique, for the approach and landing manoeuvre has always been a big priority. Of course, we are aware of some, but it is impossible to know just how many have done so, but occasionally something very exciting pops up. The respected journal, Australian Flying, recently published an article, highlighting a group of young Australian student and licenced pilots, several of whom have trained at Avia Aviation, at Moorabbin Airport (YMMB), Victoria.

After considerable reflection and research on their part, Avia paid us the ultimate compliment of adopting the Jacobson Flare as their mandated approach and landing training technique and it is surely gratifying to learn of the steady and safe progress made by these young aviators, who have been introduced to the Jacobson Flare at such an early stage and will be able to rely on the incomparable benefits of this revolutionary tool, throughout their entire flying experience.

We highly commend The Australian Flarticle:   Generation Next

Launch of Free Companion ‘Jacobson Flare News’ App

Launched: Our new FREE companion app the JACOBSON FLARE NEWS

Welcome aboard the Jacobson Flare News app: ‘Reflections on Landing’ for iOS – and Android

For some years, we have considered how we might add a FREE companion app to the Jacobson Flare brand.

A ‘light’ version of the complete Jacobson Flare app was considered inappropriate – the 35-year old concept of a compete system of landing would be compromised. Now, our friends at PressPad App, our hosts for the Jacobson Flare Apps for iOS and Android, have produced PressPad News, the perfect vehicle to present a News app companion for the comprehensive Jacobson Flare App.

The extra Jacobson Flare News App will capture all of the Blog posts from our website www.jacobsonflare.com , bringing you a fresh and convenient way of staying up to date with news and views from The Jacobson Flare – and tips on finessing your landings.

More than this, we plan articles sharing 50 years’ experience as a pilot and flight instructor/training captain in both GA and the Australian airline environment. No one could possibly imagine some of the events and episodes that shaped my early career and were later applied to the many pilots whose flight training was entrusted to me. Flight instruction is a rare privilege and, quite often, it is the instructor who learns more than the student.

Richard Bach, in ‘Illusions, stated: “We teach best what we most need to learn“. That is so true!

The creation, research, development and refinement of the Jacobson Flare has been a career-long challenge. The main objectives have always been improved flight safety and the vital raising of pilot competence – and confidence – in the most satisfying manoeuvre in all of aviation – the landing.

The Jacobson Flare App Version 1.0 for Android:

Following the recent release of the Jacobson Flare Version 2.0 for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, we are proud to finally announce the additional release of the Jacobson Flare App Version 1.0 for Android devices.

This version mirrors, as far as the different platforms permit, all of the design, content and functionality for which the iOS version has been celebrated, since 2014.

Since 1987, the unique application of The Jacobson Flare has eliminated the imprecise aspects of landing an airplane, otherwise unchanged since the end of World War 1 in 1918.

Everything else in aviation has advanced, but NOT landing training. Historically, the manual landing manoeuvre has remained indeterminate. Conventional flare techniques have involved an inconsistent, critical estimation of height above the landing surface and are subject to a number of variable factors, summarised as aircraft, pilot and environmental.

The Jacobson Flare is the first and only quantifiable, universal, consistent and unassailable landing technique in the history of aviation. To land an airplane consistently well, a pilot should be able to explain the following five questions:

1. Where to aim?
2. How to aim?
3. When to flare?
4. How much to flare?
5. How fast to flare (flare rate)?

Now, this first edition of the Jacobson Flare App for Android, answers all five applying, clearly and simply, known principles and facts that enable a pilot at any level of competence and experience to finally and fully understand HOW to make safer and more consistent landings, in any airplane type. The noted increase in pilot competence and confidence is breathtaking.

Professionally designed, the Jacobson Flare app for Android is so much more than the simple electronic equivalent of a 330-page book; interactive and inclusive. It totally replaces and greatly enhances successive and widely acclaimed presentations of the original 1987 Jacobson Flare paper, “Where to Flare” and other associated files.

This new edition of the Jacobson Flare app explores the where, when & how involved in landing an airplane, in TWO DISTINCT PRESENTATIONS:
•Designed in LANDSCAPE as an extensively illustrated comprehensive presentation, with access to the accompanying text; and also
•The Jacobson Flare TREATISE, now re-worked in Landscape and partly illustrated, designed as an e-book, for uninterrupted reading and comprehension of the complete text.

These are best viewed in landscape, on at least the screen size of a mini tablet OR larger smartphone. The bigger the screen size, the better.

Simple to understand for student pilots, it also caters for greater levels of experience with a range of tools including a unique set of five calculators professional pilots can utilise – in preparation for every flight. As well as flare point calculations, vital comparisons may be made between the normal visual aim point for any aircraft and the widely varying aim points defined by ILS, PAPI and T-Vasis approach slope guidance systems.

Graphically enhanced HD videos of various airplane types using the same consistent and quantified technique, at a diverse range of locations, highlight the Jacobson Flare app for iPad as a perfect solution to a serious long-term problem for world aviation. Thirty-five years of research and development are reflected in the intuitive design, fine production and attention to detail – just some of the hallmarks of this stylish presentation.

Summary

The Jacobson Flare has been adopted enthusiastically by thousands of pilots in 65 countries. The convenient digital format on an App has accelerated industry awareness and acceptance and offers predictable and consistently better landings for those individual pilots, at ANY level of experience, who are always seeking to improve their skill set.

Perhaps the three best descriptions come from highly experienced professional pilots: “the greatest single advance in flying training in many, many years and represents simple unassailable aerodynamic logic”; “this is probably what we have all been trying to do all these years”; and “this has the elegant simplicity of the safety pin”.

The Jacobson Flare’s Captain David Jacobson elected FRAeS

The Jacobson Flare’s Captain David Jacobson elected FRAeS

On 23 June 2015, David was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society – a highly prestigious recognition from the worlds leading aviation-oriented learned society.

‘Fellowship is the highest grade attainable and is only bestowed upon those who meet the requirements for Member and who can also demonstrate that they have achieved one of the following in the profession of aeronautics or aerospace:

  • Have made outstanding contributions;
  • Have attained a position of high responsibility in an influential role; or
  • Have had long experience of high quality’

This is undoubtedly the greatest honour David has achieved in his aviation career. He was presented with his FRAeS diploma in Melbourne on 7 October 2015, just ahead of a very well-received presentation of the Jacobson Flare to the RAeS.

David is now looking forward to contributing further to the aims and aspirations of RAeS members.
