The Effect of Synthetic Vision Enhancements on Landing Flare Performance – L. Le Ngoc, C. Borst, M. Mulder, and M. M. van Paassen – Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Delft, The Netherlands

The usage of heads-down, non-conformal synthetic vision displays for landings below minimums has inherent problems during the flare due to minification effects. Literature showed that pilots can use four visual cues to perform a manual flare maneuver.

Amongst their strategies, the Jacobson flare method seemed the most suitable to provide flare initiation and flare control cues. Offline, linear simulation results indicated that the Jacobson method was robust and its performance was comparable to an automatic landing system.

An enhanced synthetic vision display was designed offering support cues to aid pilots with this landing method. An experiment was conducted in a fixed-based simulator with eight professional pilots and eight novice pilots. The enhanced display was tested against a basic version and conventional primary flight display with outside visuals. Each pilot group was split into two groups with different display orders to check for possible learning effects. The experiment showed that touchdown position was not affected by display type. The enhanced display did achieve softer touchdown sink rates compared to the basic version.

The softest landings were done on outside visuals. A strong learning curve was also observed for the group of pilots that first flew with the enhanced display: this translated into
better achieved performances with subsequent displays. Therefore, it could be a valuable tool for basic flight training and reduce the number of flight hours required in mastering
the landing flare.

Second JF Presentation to Melbourne Flight Training, YMMB Moorabbin Airport – 28 November 2014

Thanks again to Glen, Ermin and the team at Melbourne Flight Training (MFT) at YMMB Moorabbin Airport, for the opportunity to present the Jacobson Flare to some more staff instructors and students, in formal and other focussed discussions. The Company even provided an aircraft for a couple of instructors to gain some one on one experience in applying the JF and the response to these presentations and discussions has been sensational.

Any educational institute has a responsibility to its students to regularly review what they teach and how they teach it and MFT, have welcomed me warmly, perfectly willing to look at something different – something that challenges 100 years of inertia.

In nearly thirty years of introducing the Jacobson Flare to a wide range of flight training organisations, the enthusiastic response of MFT instructors is a standout.

First JF Presentation to Melbourne Flight Training, Moorabbin Airport YMMB – 20 November 2014

Thanks to Glen Buckley and the team at Melbourne Flight Training, at YMMB Moorabbin Airport, VIC, Australia, for the opportunity to present the Jacobson Flare to more than thirty staff and student pilots, last Thursday 20 November 2014.

There was keen interest shown, especially by a very enthusiastic group of young instructors, already actively seeking a more fact-based landing training technique to raise competency levels: their own, as dedicated instructors and their students’, to give them increased skill and confidence in their own abilities.

Nothing increases confidence in performing a task, like increased confidence in one’s own knowledge base.

There has been an immediate result – one student, a refugee from two previous flight training organisations and still having landing issues, was introduced to the Jacobson Flare by her instructor and applied it, successfully and consistently, at YMEN Essendon (with its height illusion-inducing 45m wide runways), YOLA Colac and back at YMMB Moorabbin.

This revelation has been noted many times before – the improvement is immediate, because the student now has a visible instructive model, not a loose, non-descript set of personal opinions, recycled for 100 years.

We look forward to developing the relationship with Melbourne Flight Training.
